Highlanders FC In Financial Crisis Despite US$610 000 Donations As Club Faces Insolvency Threat

Highlanders Football Club is facing a major financial crisis after financial statements revealed that the Bulawayo giants are technically insolvent, with liabilities exceeding their assets by US$424 978.

The club recorded a net liability position despite receiving US$610 695 in donations during the financial year ending June 30, 2026.

Wicknell Chivayo emerged as Highlanders’ biggest financial backer during the period, contributing US$473 142, an amount that accounted for more than half of the club’s total income.

However, the financial support was not enough to prevent Bosso from recording a US$173 878 deficit after expenses climbed beyond the US$1 million mark.

The figures were presented by Highlanders executive member for finance Nkani Khoza during the club’s Extraordinary General Meeting held on Sunday.

Liabilities exceed assets

According to the financial report seen by The Chronicle, Highlanders had liabilities of US$1 043 456 against assets valued at US$618 478.

The report warned that the club’s future as a going concern was under threat due to unreliable funding sources, increasing debt and ongoing cash flow challenges.

“We are facing cash inflow challenges and this is affecting the future of the club. The club is facing an uncertain future due to the unavailability of reliable funding,” the report stated.

It added that the club was struggling to meet its financial obligations because donations often arrived after debts had already accumulated.

“Presently, there are no sponsors and the donors make their donations when we are already in arrears,” the report said.

“From the financial statements, it is clear that technically the club is unable to settle its obligations hence its future as a going concern is under serious threat.”

Heavy reliance on donations

Highlanders generated US$833 365 during the year but spent US$1 007 243, leaving the club with a significant shortfall.

Donations made up the biggest portion of revenue, contributing US$610 695 — more than 73 percent of the club’s total income.

Chivayo’s contribution covered several key expenses, including coaches’ allowances, player salaries, signing-on fees, player acquisitions, transport, accommodation and the team’s pre-season preparations.

His US$473 142 donation represented approximately 57 percent of Highlanders’ total income for the period.

Sponsorship revenue collapses

While donations increased, traditional sponsorship income declined sharply.

The club’s sponsorship revenue dropped from US$155 796 in 2025 to only US$8 115 during the latest financial year.

Only Sanctuary Insurance, Signature Suits and Pula Lethabo Still Water were listed as sponsors in the report.

Highlanders also generated US$446 538 in gross gate receipts from home matches, but retained only US$161 699 after deductions for statutory payments and other match-day obligations.

The club kept just 36.2 percent of gate collections, while US$284 839 went towards external costs.

Player costs continue to drain finances

Player and staff expenses remained one of Highlanders’ biggest financial pressures.

The club’s annual payroll reached US$461 278, with donations covering US$159 420 of that amount.

Highlanders had to source the remaining 65.4 percent through other revenue streams.

Signing-on fees also placed pressure on finances, reaching US$202 499, while inherited obligations from previous commitments stood at US$122 665.

This pushed the club’s total signing-related commitments to US$325 164.

Winning bonuses increased from US$37 500 in the previous period to US$60 950.

Player sales and prize money provide limited relief

Highlanders received US$18 000 from the transfer of midfielder Mason Mushore to South African club AmaZulu.

The club also earned US$10 000 in prize money from the Independence Cup.

However, the additional income was not enough to offset the club’s growing financial obligations.

The latest financial report has raised concerns over Highlanders’ long-term sustainability, with the club heavily dependent on donations rather than stable commercial revenue streams.
