Sensex Today | Stock Market Highlights:
Benchmark indices ended sharply lower on Wednesday, with the Sensex plunging 1,342 points to close at 76,864 and the Nifty dropping 395 points to settle at 23,867, as broad-based selling weighed on the market.
Selling pressure was widespread, with 25 of the 30 Sensex constituents closing in the red. On the Nifty, 41 stocks ended lower, including 16 that declined more than 2%. Market breadth remained negative, with the NSE advance-decline ratio at 2:3.
Financial stocks led the decline, dragging the frontline indices lower. The Nifty Bank index tumbled 1,215 points, or over 2%, to end at 55,736, with Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and IndusInd Bank emerging as the top losers in the pack. The midcap index also witnessed heavy selling, falling 717 points to close at 56,461.
Auto stocks added to the pressure, with TVS Motor slipping nearly 5% amid broader weakness in the sector. In the derivatives segment, Colgate emerged as the top F&O loser, plunging over 6% on strong volumes. Cable and wire makers Polycab and KEI Industries extended their recent losses, dropping as much as 10% over the past two sessions amid concerns over volume growth.
On the gaining side, select stocks bucked the broader market trend. Fertilisers and Chemicals Travancore (FACT) extended its rally, surging 32% over the past two sessions. Oil India gained nearly 3% as Brent crude prices climbed above $92 per barrel. Meanwhile, Shakti Pumps, Oswal Pumps, VA Tech, and Astral advanced up to 7% after the government extended the Jal Jeevan Mission.
InterGlobe Aviation (IndiGo) failed to hold on to early gains and ended the session about 4% off its day’s highs.
