Egypt Peace Summit Live Updates: United States President Donald Trump arrived in Israel’s capital Tel Aviv on Monday, Oct 13 as the US brokered Israel-Hamas ceasefire and peace agreement to stop the war in Gaza holds steady. Hamas released all the 20 living Israeli hostages.
Following the condition of the deal, Hamas released the first set of living Israeli hostages and handed over seven people to the Red Cross team in Gaza Strip. A few hours later, the group released the remaining 13 Israelis as well, after holding them hostage for over two years since Oct 7, 2023.
Trump lands in Israel
Trump was welcomed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog along with their spouses at the Ben Gurion Airport.
Trump emerged from the US Air Force One aircraft alone, pumped his fist, smiled, and then descended the stairs.
Egypt Summit on Gaza
Egypt is hosting the Gaza peace summit in Sharm El-Sheikh which will be co-chaired by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El Sisi and Trump. Over 20 world leaders are expected to attend the summit, including United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres, UK PM Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron among others.
Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs Ministry, Kirti Vardhan Singh, will be representing India at the peace summit.
Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas is also expected to attend the summit on Gaza, according to Macron.
Mr Abbas, who leads the Palestinian Authority, “will be present at this summit”, Macron was quoted as saying by AFP. “It’s a very good sign… It’s a recognition of the role the Palestinian Authority has to play as a legitimate entity,” he said.
“On the questions of governance, we will have a particular role to be by the side of the Palestinian Authority and to ensure it plays its part, and also that it conducts reforms for the day after,” he added.
Trump says ‘war is over’
US President Donald Trump wrote a message in the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) guest book after arriving in Israel.
“As far as I’m concerned, the war is over,” Trump said alongside Netanyahu ahead of his Knesset address, reported Haaretz.
“This is my great honour. A great and beautiful day, a new beginning,” Trump wrote in the book.
